GAME DAY BLOG: CGY vs. DET 31.10.09
THIRD PERIOD ACTION (3-1 DET)
MIXING IT UP: After a lackluster second period, head coach Brent Sutter started to mix his lines up. Eric Nystrom, Craig Conroy and David Moss have been extremely dangerous, notching chance after chance. The bounces aren't going their way but you've got to think they'll be able to find the back of the net if they keep the energy up.
GOALS: Maltby at 19:16 (EN)

PENALTIES: CGY 1 DET 0

TOP ICE TIME: Bouwmeester with 25:58 followed by Phaneuf with 23:23
SECOND PERIOD ACTION (2-1 DET)
RED HOT ROBYN: Regehr is currently riding a five-game point streak which is a career high. He's registered an assist in the last five games and has been a +8 in those tilts. Last season, he had eight assists in total.
PK EXCELLENCE: The Flames have not been pleased with the penalty killing on home ice recently but they've seemed to work out their system tonight. They've held the Wings off and have created a scoring opportunity or two while down a man.
GOALS: CGY Langkow from Bourque and Regehr at 14:43
DET Stuart from Draper and Helm at 15:18
DET Holmstrom from Datsyuk at 16:17
SHOTS: CGY 12 DET 23
PENALTIES: CGY 2 DET 1
HITS: CGY 11 DET 7
TOP ICE TIME: Bouwmeester with 18:20 followed by Phaneuf with 14:57
FIRST PERIOD ACTION (0-0)
HAPPY HALLOWEEN: The C of Red is awash in excellent Halloween costumes. The best we've seen so far have to be an incredibly realistic Gene Simmons Kiss outfit, a full chicken outfit, Jesus complete with a halo and a disgruntled Leafs fan with a giant paper bag over their head.
UNFRIENDLY WELCOME: Tonight is Todd Bertuzzi's first visit back to the C of Red and as suspected, the fans weren't too friendly. The boo birds came out every time #44 touched the puck.
HIGHWAY ROBBERY: Kiprusoff made a highlight-reel save in the dying seconds of the first period when he robbed Kris Draper with his left pad. On a 2-on-1, Patrick Eaves sent a pass over to a streaking Draper who looked like he had a sure goal. Kiprusoff extended all the way over the left side and managed to get a pad on it, holding the game even at 0-0.

LINE NOTES
Staffan Kronwall skated with Mark Giordano this morning. He's expected to draw into the lineup. His older brother and fellow blueliner, Niklas Kronwall, will be playing for the Wings.
Dustin Boyd skated with the team for the past two days. He was on a line with Eric Nystrom and Brandon Prust this morning.
PREGAME NOTES AND THOUGHTS
The Flames may be coming off a tough loss to the Colorado Avalanche but it's almost guaranteed the Detroit Red Wings are feeling much worse.
On Thursday they were dealt several blows by the Edmonton Oilers. First, they spotted Edmonton a four-goal lead. They battled back and managed to send the game to a shootout but couldn't get anything past netminder Nikolai Khabibulan and lost 6-5.
It was the team's fifth road loss this season - they've only managed one win away from the Joe Louis Arena.
To make matters even worse for the Wings, they lost key contributor Valterri Filppula for 6-8 weeks with a broken wrist during the loss.
"It's a big blow, obviously," head coach Mike Babcock said. "We're going to have to buckle down as a team. It doesn't matter who's not here. It's about who is here. We are going to miss Fil. You don't replace good players like that. But we have to find a way to win games."
The ability to jump back into the game after spotting the other team a lead is something the Flames need to be aware of. Several times this season Calgary has gotten themselves ahead by a few goals only to give them up.
"We've got to, first of all, get out to that lead," said Robyn Regehr after the morning skate. "Once we do that, there's a couple of things we can work on. First of all, the penalty killing at home has not been anywhere near where we need it to be. So that can be a lot better and you can probably attribute that back to giving up some of those leads andsome of those goals."
Injuries have hampered the Red Wings throughout the month of October. In addition to Filppula, they've been without Johan Franzen and Andreas Lilja for most of the campaign.
Defence has been a weakness for the Wings during the first month of the regular season. Other than the always rock-solid Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit's defenders have looked very human. Lidstrom and Niklas Kronwall are the only defenders without a minus rating on the season.
Goaltending is also shaky in the Motor City. Chris Osgood hasn't impressed many this season and backup netminder Jimmy Howard didn't look overly sharp in Edmonton. Expect Osgood back in net against the Flames.
"We need to take advantage of their weakest position and so far, that's been their goaltending," said Regehr.
The team is going to have to make some quick adjustments to their lineup and that will most likely favour the Flames. If they can pounce on an unprepared Detroit squad, they'll be able to garner several scoring chances.
Offensively, Jarome Iginla has been stifled by Detroit over the past couple of campaigns. He's gone 17 regular season games without a goal and that's something he's well aware of.
"I was just in the back and saw that on the ticker," the captain said. "Obviously, I've got to do something different and I plan on doing that tonight. That's a long time to be off the score sheet against one team."
Game time is 8:00 p.m. MST on CBC & The FAN 960.
